ilmaime.ee

Live local weather mapping
Born out of a passion for windsurfing, ilmaime.ee started as a practical solution to a specific problem: the constant need for accurate, up-to-the-minute wind and weather data. While it began as a hobby project, it quickly grew into a highly useful tool for many locals and serves as a great showcase of lightweight, efficient web technologies. Instead of relying on a heavy CMS, the platform uses custom Python backend scripts to process live Estonian meteorological data and plot it directly onto Google Maps.
Key highlights
Passion-driven utility: Created originally to serve the local windsurfing community's demand for hyper-local, real-time weather conditions before hitting the water.
Python-powered backend: Uses custom, lightweight Python scripts to continuously fetch and parse live weather APIs without the bulk or overhead of a traditional monolithic backend.
Interactive map integration: Connects the parsed live data stream directly with the Google Maps API to visually map current conditions across Estonia in an easy-to-read format.
Fast and responsive: Built specifically to load quickly and run smoothly on mobile devices, ensuring users can check live conditions right from the beach.
