Because Edge KV replicates data across global network of hundreds of data centers, the "prewarmed" page sits waiting and ready, just milliseconds away from the end user. When a request comes in, a serverless edge function intercepts it and serves the fully assembled payload from the local data center instantly, completely bypassing the origin server.
Why centralized VPS can't compete with edge?
Even if a CMS on a centralized VPS (e.g., in Germany) pre-generates perfectly optimized, flat HTML files, it cannot overcome the physical limitations of network routing:
The speed of light bottleneck
Data must physically travel through fiber optic cables. For a user in Australia accessing a German VPS, the mandatory TCP and TLS handshakes require multiple round trips across the globe before a single byte of content is downloaded.
TTFB cascades into LCP
As visualized in our performance data, geographical distance severely inflates the Time to First Byte (TTFB). Because the browser cannot begin downloading CSS, parsing the DOM, or fetching hero images until the initial HTML document arrives, a 1.5-second TTFB delay directly translates into a sluggish 2.5-second Largest Contentful Paint (LCP).
Vulnerability to network congestion
A single centralized origin means data packets must traverse multiple international hops and peering points. This increases the risk of packet loss, jitter, and inconsistent load times compared to an Edge server that connects to the user locally.
The challenges of edge caching
Stale content and cold renderings
While global edge caching solves latency, it introduces a new challenge: managing updates and time-controlled publishing. The hardest part of edge delivery isn't distribution—it's cache invalidation. Without deep content editing software integration, visitors might see stale pages. To avoid this, traditional setups rely on short expirations (like a 5-minute TTL). However, this creates a performance penalty, forcing slow "cold" server renderings for users who visit right after the cache expires — even when nothing has actually changed.
How we solve it
To overcome this invalidation hurdle and ensure consistently instant global load times, we use two primary approaches. For a turnkey solution, the KAMA content engine features built-in edge delivery, KV cache prewarming, and intelligent purging. This eliminates 5-minute limits and cold renderings entirely; pages are cached indefinitely until a change occurs.
Your global audience always receives the freshest content at the best speed possible, without ever sacrificing cache efficiency.
